A study by TalentCorp revealed that 620,000 jobs in Malaysia are at risk of being replaced by advances in AI, digital technology, and the green economy.
The findings were announced by Steven Sim Chee Keong, Minister of Human Resources, which impacted workers in 10 key sectors such as aerospace, chemical, and energy, which together contribute more than RM933 billion to the country's GDP.
Steven Sim explains that the study conducted from April to September 2024 has found that 18% of the 3.5 million workers in these sectors are at risk of losing their jobs in the next 3 to 5 years, while another 53% need to adapt or improve their skills.
In addition, the study identified 60 new roles of increasing importance, with 70% of them related to AI and digital, 20% in the green economy, and 10% in new technologies.
He explained that employers now prioritize employees with specific skills to remain competitive.
TalentCorp plans to implement Phase 2 of this study next year, which will focus on 12 additional sectors.
